When we stop trusting God and start trusting what we can build, we create modern-day golden calves—but lasting hope is found only through Jesus Christ, our true Advocate.
Waiting is one of the hardest parts of following God. We want answers now, relief now, and certainty now. But the story of Israel and the golden calf reminds us that our greatest temptations often come while we're waiting.
After God had rescued Israel from slavery, parted the Red Sea, provided food from heaven, and defeated their enemies, Moses climbed Mount Sinai to receive God's law. Days passed, and the people grew impatient. Believing Moses wasn't coming back, they asked Aaron to make them a golden calf. They weren't trying to reject God altogether—they were trying to replace trusting Him with something they could see and control.
We aren't much different.
We may not bow before a golden statue, but we often place our hope in things we believe will give us security and satisfaction. We look to money, success, politics, comfort, relationships, or even our nation to provide what only God can give. We convince ourselves that if we can just build the right life, fix the right problem, or create the right future, we'll finally have peace.
But Scripture reminds us that nothing in this world can replace the presence of God.
The Israelites forgot that it was God—not the calf—who had rescued, provided, and protected them. We forget the same truth when we trust created things more than the Creator. The problem isn't simply idolatry; it's believing something else can do what only God has always done.
The encouraging news is that God never abandoned His people. Moses stood before the Lord as an advocate, pleading for mercy on Israel's behalf. That points us to the greater Advocate we have today: Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus took the judgment we deserved and opened the way for us to be reconciled with God.
That is why our greatest hope has never been found in a better economy, stronger politics, or a more comfortable life. Our hope is found in Christ alone.
As we look at our nation and our own lives, the answer isn't building a modern-day golden calf. The answer is another awakening—a fresh movement of hearts turning back to Jesus. Real change has always begun there.
So while we wait for tomorrow, remain faithful today. Trust the God who has already rescued you, continue walking with Him, and pray that He would once again awaken hearts to the only One who truly saves.
